About NEONATAL HME AND HMEF

The HME (Heat-Moisture-Exchanger) filter cassettes for heat and moisture exchange, condition the air, improve the quality of speech and are simple to use, independent of whether the patients use a voice prosthesis or not. A tracheostomy leads to a loss of mouth/nose breathing, this means that the filtering, warming and humidification of the air has to happen in a different way. To prevent irritation of the airways, due to dry air, dust or harmful substances contained in the air, a filter is required. After surgery, tracheostomised/laryngectomised patients frequently suffer from increased production of mucous and coughing. These symptoms can impair speech rehabilitation and breathing. The regular use of HME filter cassettes with Heat and Moisture Exchangers alleviates the symptoms and increases the quality of life.

The MEDEREN combined filter/HME product line offers solutions to meet the needs of both anesthesia and intensive care.

  • Bidirectional filtration offers both patient and equipment protection from airborne pathogens
  • Available in a variety of sizes to meet all clinical situations
  • All units feature outstanding moisture output, low resistance to flow and minimal deadspace
  • Our lightweight heat and moisture exchangers (HME) and heat moisture exchanger with filter (HMEF) provide low resistance to flow. They are also treated to provide bacteriostatic and hygroscopic (HCH) benefits

Superior Filtration & Passive Humidification

Utilizing advanced electrostatic technology, the HME and HMEF achieve filtration efficiencies greater than 99.99% for bacteria and viruses, delivering vital protection for vulnerable neonatal patients. The passive humidification process efficiently preserves airway moisture, reducing the risk of complications while maintaining a quiet and seamless operation within neonatal intensive care environments.

Low Resistance, Enhanced Patient Comfort

The design ensures minimal resistance to airflow (<2.0 cm H2O at 30 L/min) and low dead space (<6 ml), making these devices ideal for neonates and infants with tidal volumes up to 150 ml. The lightweight construction and ISO-compliant connectors facilitate simple installation and reliable compatibility with all neonatal respiratory circuits, ensuring uninterrupted patient care.

FAQ's of NEONATAL HME AND HMEF:

Q: How does the neonatal HME/HMEF function within a respiratory circuit?

A: The neonatal HME/HMEF passively humidifies and filters inhaled air by capturing heat and moisture from exhaled breath, then returning it to the inhaled air, while their electrostatic filtration removes over 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, ensuring safe and comfortable respiratory support for neonates.

Q: What are the benefits of using this HME/HMEF in neonatal care?

A: This device provides high-efficiency filtration against pathogens, maintains optimal airway humidity, reduces the risk of infections, offers low resistance for neonatal patients, and supports silent, reliable operation, all in a lightweight, disposable format suitable for critical care.

Q: When should I replace the neonatal HME/HMEF?

A: The HME/HMEF is designed for single-use and should be replaced as per hospital protocol or if visibly soiled, increased resistance is noticed, or after a maximum recommended duration outlined in the usage guidelines.

Q: Where can this device be used?

A: These HMEs and HMEFs are intended for use in neonatal and infant respiratory care circuits in settings such as NICUs, pediatric intensive care units, emergency departments, and during patient transport, across hospitals and healthcare centers.

Q: What process should be followed to use the HME/HMEF safely?

A: Ensure the device remains in its sterile, original packaging until time of use. Attach the correct ISO connector to the ventilator circuit, taking care to minimize handling. Dispose of the device after single use following hospital infection control protocols.

Q: How compatible is this device with different ventilators and circuits?

A: The HME/HMEF has 15M/15F/22F ISO standard connectors and is compatible with all neonatal ventilators and respiratory circuits, allowing universal integration and flexible usage across various medical devices.
